Childhood Vacations

My parents never took vacations as they both worked and that time was for tending the garden which was coming to harvest and/or making repairs or painting our home. However, in my pre-teens, I would spend a week with my cousin in New Jersey and we would make houses and play with our paper dolls.

As we entered high school our lifestyle changed and my uncle would take us to New York City and we would visit the Stature of Liberty, visit Wall Street and Trinity Church, go to the Central Park Zoo, the Empire State Building and Radio City Music Hall, but not all in the same day. These trips were over a period of three years from 1939 through 1941. My uncle was still on the Depression work schedule of “three days a week” so he was able to take us around.
